The pursuit of intangible needs faith not works
30What then shall we say? That the Gentiles, who did not pursue righteousness, have obtained it, a righteousness that is by faith; 31but Israel, who pursued a law of righteousness, has not attained it. 32Why not? Because they pursued it not by faith but as if it were by works. They stumbled over the "stumbling stone."Romans 9:30-32
This verse has shed a new light for me on the saying "By Faith not by Works". Most commonly this is regarding salvation, but it is also how we should deal with situations in life. I think often this is applied to having faith that someone will be healed or that finances won't be a worry. These things are easily able to see the progress and results...you can see someone become healthy, you can put money aside and see debts go away one by one...Look at this verse, these people were striving for righteousness...something that is only noticeable by the change in a persons actions. Something that may be inconsistent, something intangible. I think that there are many things that we strive for similar to righteousness in our lives. Often we may convince ourselves that we are on the right path, then the issue is back...I think this is a clue that if it's coming back...our approach is wrong...ask yourself are YOU WORKING on it? or are you putting your FAITH in God and letting Him take it over? Once we've turned it over to God in prayer, I am convinced that there is nothing that we can nor need to do...only petition for a renewal of the Holy Spirit.
I think I really got turned around with this...sorry if you had difficulty following...I may try and clean it up latter...but I doubt it.
